BRIDGING THE GAP FOR DOVER FASTRACK
04-07-2023
The successful installation of a new bridge across the A2 in Whitfield marks a key milestone in the delivery of Fastrack, Dover's new zero-emission electric bus route.
The 60-hour operation to lift and secure the new bridge in place across the A2 was undertaken by project contractors, Colas and local firm, NuSteel Structures from Lympne who fabricated the bridge beams. A 150-tonne crane was used to straddle the A2 and lift five 31.5m beams each weighing 30 tonnes into place.
Cllr Jamie Pout, Dover District Council’s Cabinet Member for transport thanked residents and businesses for their patience. He said: “Whilst everything went to plan, we’re aware that the works inevitably caused some inconvenience and disturbance, especially for those living and working nearest to the bridge.
“The bridge lift is a highly visible sign of progress on Dover Fastrack, which from next year will offer the district’s first zero-emission bus service connecting new homes at Whitfield with Dover town centre and high-speed services from Dover Priory railway station.”
Nicholas Dobbie, Project Director, Colas, said: “Despite some difficult weather conditions we were able to successfully complete the bridge beam lift. This installation marks a significant milestone in the construction of Dover Fastrack, and work continues onsite to prepare for the next stages of the bridge construction. Thank you to all the team involved and to residents and businesses for their understanding and patience while we carried out this crucial step.”
