Birmingham Westside Metro extension opens to passengers ahead of schedule

Construction on the Birmingham Westside Metro extension commenced on 12 June 2017, and follows the expansion of the network from St. Chads to Grand Central, which opened for service in May 2016, seeing passenger numbers increase by more than three million in a year.

The new extension, which opened ahead of schedule, means that a six minute peak time service will deliver passengers to attractions including the Library of Birmingham, Symphony Hall, ICC, The Birmingham Repertory Theatre, Council House and Town Hall as well as offices in and around Centenary Square and Victoria Square. Colas Ltd provided early contractor involvement throughout the design stages and Management input with specific focus on our core disciplines.

Two more Birmingham city centre tram stops have now been opened to passengers offering direct services to attractions and shows, including the German Christmas market, big wheel and ice rink in the city centre.

The Midland Metro Alliance consists of the WMCA, which owns the West Midlands Metro; a consortium of design experts from Egis, Tony Gee and Pell Frischmann; and rail construction specialists Colas Rail – supported by Colas’ sub-alliance partners Colas Ltd, Barhale, Bouygues UK and Auctus Management Group.
