Portsmouth PFI Team Collaborate on Major junction Upgrade

The Portsmouth PFI team have recently completed a comprehensive package of works at one of Portsmouth’s busiest junctions. As part of the Lifecycle Replacement (LCR) Works programme carried out under the PFI, the project, taking place on the Marriot Junction, a busy junction leading in and out of the city, included the complete replacement and refurbishment of all traffic signals, as well as the replacement of street lighting columns and full carriageway resurfacing. These upgrades not only extend the lifespan of the street furniture but also aim to improve traffic flow and enhance safety for all road users.

As one of only three primary routes on and off Portsea Island, the timing of the work has been strategically planned in collaboration with National Highways and major utility companies to prevent any overlap with other significant planned projects, as well as close collaboration with emergency services and local businesses to ensure effective coordination and minimise disruption throughout the project.

The first phase of the project began in April 2025, when the traffic signals were replaced. To minimise disruption to the network, the team installed Urban 64 temporary traffic signals and carried out the works at night.

Following completion of the traffic signal refurbishment, the second phase of works began which included the replacement of street lighting columns, and carriageway resurfacing. This part of the project required a full closure of the junction, with each team coordinating their works to minimise overall disruption and to maximise safety on site. The project was completed ahead of schedule on 11th July 2025, allowing for the road to reopen earlier than anticipated.

This project also showcased our commitment to collaboration, as the team worked closely with National Highways to facilitate their contractor's activities on the M275 slip roads. This partnership not only maximised the use of resources but also minimised disruption to the road network, allowing for a more cohesive approach to improving traffic flow and safety in the area.

Matt Dale, Project Manager (LCR Works), said “This combined package of works at one of the busiest junctions in Portsmouth is one of the largest and complex schemes carried out under the Portsmouth PFI contract. I am pleased to confirm that the project was completed ahead of schedule, but more importantly it was completed safely with minimal disruption to the network due to everyone playing their part and looking out for each other. This couldn’t have been achieved without the dedication and hard work from everyone who was involved.”
